Proper trim tab installation is key to achieving optimal boat performance and control. Trim tabs should follow the natural lines of your boat's hull at the stern.
Positioning Trim Tabs on the Transom
When installing trim tabs, the primary rule for positioning is to ensure they align with the shape where the back (transom) meets the bottom of the boat. Specifically:
- Trim tabs should follow the "V" at the junction of the transom and the bottom of the boat. This ensures they are properly aligned with the hull's planing surface.
Achieving Maximum Control
To maximize the effectiveness of your trim tabs, particularly for side-to-side leveling and control, consider the following placement guidelines:
- Distance from Chine: Trim tabs are generally mounted 3-4" from the chine (the corner where the side of the boat meets the bottom).
- Direction: From this position, they should run towards the keel (the centerline of the bottom of the boat).
- Inboard Boats: With boats powered by inboards, you may be able to utilize the complete run from chine to keel for the trim tab if it is an unbroken span of the same angle. This can provide a larger surface area for control.
By following these placement principles, you can ensure your trim tabs are installed in a position that allows them to effectively adjust the boat's running angle, improving speed, fuel efficiency, ride comfort, and handling.
