Characteristics of Normal Pleural Fluid

- Volume: The pleural space usually contains less than 20 milliliters (4 teaspoons) of this fluid. This limited volume allows the lungs to expand and contract easily during breathing.
- Function: The main function of pleural fluid is to act as a lubricant, reducing friction between the lungs and the chest wall during respiration.
Changes in Pleural Fluid Color
While normal pleural fluid is clear and yellowish, its color can change in certain medical conditions. Alterations in color may indicate underlying health issues, such as:
- Turbidity/Cloudiness: Can suggest the presence of infection or inflammation.
- Reddish/Bloody: May indicate the presence of blood (hemothorax) due to injury or other conditions.
- Milky: Can be a sign of chylothorax, where lymphatic fluid leaks into the pleural space.
