How to Measure Drop Waist?

Published in Body Measurement 3 mins read

To measure your drop waist, wrap a measuring tape around your body about 5cm below your belly button, specifically at approximately the top of your hip bone.

Understanding where to measure is key for accurate sizing, especially when dealing with garments designed to sit lower than the natural waistline.

Why Measure the Drop Waist?

While the natural waist is often used for standard sizing (measured comfortably after exhaling, usually close to the belly button, which isn't necessarily the narrowest point), some garments, like drop-waist skirts or dresses, are designed to fit around a lower part of your torso. This lower area is what's referred to as the drop waist.

Steps to Measure Your Drop Waist

Measuring your drop waist accurately is straightforward. Here's how to do it:

  1. Locate the Area: Identify the spot about 5cm (approximately 2 inches) below your belly button. This area should be roughly level with the top of your hip bones.
  2. Position the Tape: Wrap a flexible measuring tape around your body at this specific location. Ensure the tape is level all the way around.
  3. Take the Measurement: Read the number where the tape overlaps. Make sure the tape is snug but not so tight that it pinches the skin or is uncomfortable.
  • Tip: Stand relaxed and breathe normally while measuring for the most accurate result.

Comparing Natural Waist vs. Drop Waist

It's helpful to know the difference between the natural waist and the drop waist, as they are measured at different points and will result in different measurements.

  • Natural Waist: Measured at or near the narrowest part of your torso or close to the belly button.
  • Drop Waist: Measured lower down, about 5cm below your belly button at about the top of your hip bone.

Knowing both measurements can be useful depending on the style of clothing you are purchasing or making.

Essential Tools

You only need one primary tool:

  • A flexible measuring tape (fabric or plastic)

Measuring your drop waist correctly ensures a better fit for certain styles of clothing, contributing to overall comfort and appearance.
