How to Tell If Your Body Is Alkaline or Acidic?

Published in Body pH Balance 2 mins read

While you might be tempted to check, it's important to understand that it's not really possible to determine if your entire body is alkaline or acidic because pH varies greatly within your body. Some parts are acidic, while others are alkaline. There's no set level for the whole body.

Many proponents of alkaline diets suggest monitoring urine pH to see if it's alkaline (over 7) or acidic (below 7). However, urine pH is not a reliable indicator of overall body pH.

Here's a breakdown:

  • Different Parts, Different pH: Your body maintains different pH levels in different areas. For example, your stomach needs to be highly acidic to digest food.

  • Urine pH Isn't the Whole Story: While urine pH can be measured, it primarily reflects what your kidneys are excreting to maintain blood pH balance and is influenced by recent food intake and other factors.

  • Blood pH is Tightly Regulated: Your body has sophisticated mechanisms to keep your blood pH within a very narrow range (around 7.35-7.45). Significant deviations from this range are dangerous and require immediate medical attention.

Body Fluid Typical pH Range
Blood 7.35 - 7.45
Stomach Acid 1.5 - 3.5
Urine 4.5 - 8.0

Attempting to significantly alter your body's pH through diet is generally unnecessary and can sometimes be harmful. Your body is designed to maintain pH balance on its own. If you have concerns about your health, consult a healthcare professional.
