How Do You Remove Earrings After Piercing?

Published in Body Piercing Aftercare 2 mins read

Removing earrings after a piercing requires a gentle approach to prevent infection and discomfort. Here's how to do it correctly:

  1. Wash Your Hands and Ears: Thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water before touching your ears or earrings. Clean the front and back of your earlobes with the same soap and water. This minimizes the risk of introducing bacteria to the piercing site.

  2. Gently Loosen the Backing:

    • With one hand, firmly hold the front of the earring. This will stabilize the earring and prevent it from moving around excessively.
    • With your other hand, grasp the earring backing. If it's a butterfly clasp, gently align it horizontally.
    • Carefully wiggle the backing up and down. Apply gentle pressure while wiggling to loosen it. Avoid pulling or forcing the backing, as this can damage the piercing or irritate the skin. You should feel it loosen gradually.
  3. Remove the Earring: Once the backing is loose, gently pull it straight off. Then, carefully slide the earring out of the piercing.

  4. Clean the Piercing and Earring: After removing the earring, clean the piercing site with saline solution or a piercing aftercare solution. Clean the earring post with rubbing alcohol to remove any bacteria.

Important Considerations:

  • New Piercings: If you've just had your ears pierced, follow the specific aftercare instructions provided by your piercer. It's generally recommended to wait at least 6-8 weeks before removing the initial earrings. Premature removal can lead to closure of the piercing.
  • Stuck Backings: If the earring backing is stuck, don't force it. Try applying a small amount of lubricant (like petroleum jelly) around the backing and gently wiggling it again. If it still doesn't budge, consult a professional piercer.
  • Signs of Infection: If you notice any signs of infection (redness, swelling, pain, pus), consult a doctor or piercer immediately. Do not attempt to remove the earring if there's an active infection without professional guidance.
