How Do I Control the Heat in My Boiler?

Published in Boiler Maintenance 2 mins read

Controlling the heat in your boiler largely depends on the type of boiler you have.

Types of Boilers and How to Adjust Heat

There are primarily two types of boilers to consider: conventional boilers with a hot water cylinder and combi boilers without a hot water cylinder. The method for controlling the heat differs for each.

Conventional Boiler (with Hot Water Cylinder)

  • Adjustment: You'll typically find one dial or setting to adjust the flow temperature for your radiators.
  • What it Controls: This single setting controls the temperature of the water being sent to your radiators to heat your home.

Combi Boiler (without Hot Water Cylinder)

  • Adjustment: You'll typically find two dials or settings.
  • What They Control:
    • Radiator Temperature: One dial controls the flow temperature for your central heating radiators.
    • Hot Water Temperature: The other dial controls the temperature of the hot water coming from your taps.

Important Considerations:

  • Lowering Flow Temperature: Adjusting the flow temperature is generally done to improve efficiency. Lowering the temperature can save energy.
  • Monitoring Comfort: After making adjustments, monitor your home's temperature to ensure adequate heating and comfort.
  • Consulting the Manual: Always refer to your boiler's manual for specific instructions, as controls may vary between models.
