How Do You Rekey a BOLT Lock?

Published in BOLT Lock Security 2 mins read

You cannot rekey a BOLT lock.

According to the manufacturer, BOLT Locks cannot be reset. For security reasons, all BOLT Locks are designed to permanently learn and retain the coding of the very first key inserted and turned into the lock cylinder. Once they have learned this initial key, the coding is fixed and cannot be changed or rekeyed.

Why BOLT Locks Cannot Be Rekeyed

The inability to rekey BOLT locks is a deliberate security feature. This permanent learning mechanism is implemented to prevent unauthorized access and potential issues:

  • Security: It stops someone from simply walking up to your vehicle or secure item, inserting their own key, and resetting the lock to match their key.
  • Prevention of Lockout: This design prevents scenarios where an unauthorized person could accidentally or intentionally reset your lock, potentially locking you out of your own belongings.
  • Theft Deterrent: By permanently coding to your specific vehicle's ignition key (or the first key used), it makes it significantly harder for a thief to bypass the lock by attempting to rekey it.

In summary, once a BOLT lock has been set to a specific key, its coding is permanent, and there is no process or method to rekey it to a different key.
