The pH of bones is inherently high, typically between 8 and 10.
This elevated pH is due to the primary components of bone, which include phosphatic minerals. Bones are complex composite materials made up of:
- A significant amount of phosphatic minerals
- Collagen
- Water
- Other proteins and lipids
The presence of these phosphatic minerals is the key factor in the alkalinity of bone tissue (Pfretzschner 2004). Consequently, bones maintain a pH level leaning towards the alkaline side of the pH scale.
