How do I import bookmarks from my Gmail account?

Published in Bookmarks & Sync 2 mins read

Unfortunately, you can't directly import bookmarks from your Gmail account itself. Gmail doesn't store bookmarks. Bookmarks are typically stored within your web browser (like Chrome, Firefox, Safari, etc.). However, if you used Google Chrome and synced your bookmarks with your Google account (the same account you use for Gmail), you can import those synced bookmarks into Chrome on another device or browser.

Here's how to import bookmarks that were synced with your Google Account via Chrome:

  1. Open Chrome on the computer you want to import the bookmarks to.
  2. In the upper right corner, click the three vertical dots (More). This opens the Chrome menu.
  3. Select "Bookmarks", a sub-menu will appear.
  4. Select "Import Bookmarks and Settings."
  5. In the dropdown menu, select "Bookmarks HTML file" or "Google Chrome" (if importing from another Chrome profile).
  6. If you chose "Bookmarks HTML file," browse to the location of the HTML file you previously exported (this assumes you exported bookmarks at some point). If you chose "Google Chrome," select the profile you want to import from.
  7. Click "Import."

If your bookmarks aren't syncing with your Google account (and therefore, not accessible for importing via Chrome's sync feature), you may need to enable syncing:

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Click your profile icon in the top-right corner.
  3. Turn on Sync.
  4. Sign in to your Google Account (the one you use for Gmail).
  5. Confirm that "Bookmarks" is turned on in the sync settings. Go to chrome://settings/syncSetup/advanced in your address bar to check advanced sync settings.

After enabling sync, your bookmarks will automatically be saved to your Google Account, allowing you to access them on other devices where you are logged in to Chrome with the same account. Keep in mind it may take a few minutes to sync.
