How to get a cork out of a bottle?

Published in Bottle Opening Techniques 3 mins read

If you find yourself without a corkscrew, a simple string or ribbon can help you remove a stuck cork from a bottle.

Getting a cork out of a bottle when you don't have a corkscrew can be tricky, but a common method involves using a piece of string or ribbon. This technique leverages the flexibility of the string to maneuver past the cork and create leverage from below.

Using String or Ribbon

This method is particularly useful for corked bottles like wine bottles when traditional opening tools aren't accessible. It requires patience and gentle manipulation.

Here's how to do it:

  1. Prepare the String: Take a piece of string or ribbon and tie a knot at one end. The knot should be small enough to pass between the cork and the bottle neck, but large enough to catch on the bottom of the cork.
  2. Insert the String: Using a thin, blunt tool like a paring knife (be cautious not to cut the string or yourself), gently push the unknotted end of the string down into the bottle. Guide it carefully between the cork and the neck of the bottle.
  3. Pass the Cork: Continue pushing the string until the knotted end passes entirely beyond the bottom of the cork and is inside the bottle.
  4. Position the String: Once the knot is past the cork, maneuver the string so that the knot is positioned directly underneath the cork.
  5. Apply Gentle Pressure: Tug gently upwards on the string. The knot should catch on the bottom surface of the cork.
  6. Partial Extraction: Pulling the string upwards will help to pull the cork out of the bottle neck just enough to grasp it.
  7. Final Removal: Once the cork is sticking out far enough to get a good grip, release the string and pull the cork the rest of the way out by hand.

Reference Insight: As noted on November 22, 2021, the key is to get the knotted string past the cork and then use the knot to apply upward force. "Tie a knot at the end of a piece of string or ribbon. Using a paring knife, push the string down into the bottle between the cork and the neck until it passes the cork. Tug gently on the string to pull the cork out far enough to grasp it and pull it the rest of the way out by hand."

This method may take a few attempts, especially depending on how tightly the cork fits in the bottle. Be persistent and avoid excessive force that could break the cork or damage the bottle.
