Why do we dream?

Published in Brain Function 2 mins read

The prevailing theory is that dreaming helps us consolidate and analyze memories (like skills and habits) and likely serves as a “rehearsal” for various situations and challenges we face during the daytime. Although experts aren't sure why we dream and where they come from, this theory suggests that dreams allow our brains to process and organize information gathered throughout the day.

While processing memories and rehearsing for future situations, our brains may also be preventing the senses from "taking over" the visual cortex when it goes unused. This means that dreaming might help us maintain the functionality of our brains during sleep.

Dreaming can also be a way for us to express emotions and desires that we may not be able to express consciously. This is why many dreams can feel surreal and illogical, as they are simply the subconscious mind processing and organizing information in its own unique way.

In summary:

  • Dreams help consolidate and analyze memories.
  • Dreams function as a rehearsal for various situations.
  • Dreaming might help to maintain brain functionality.
  • Dreams are a way to process and express emotions and desires.
