What do normal breasts look like?

Published in Breast Health 2 mins read

There's no single "normal" breast shape or size. Breasts come in all shapes and sizes, and what's considered "normal" is highly individual. The ideal breast does not sag and appears firm and rounded. It's important to note that even lumpy breast tissue can be normal, as long as the lumpiness is consistent throughout the breast and feels similar in both breasts. Here are some general characteristics of breasts:

  • Shape: Breasts can be round, oval, teardrop-shaped, or even asymmetrical.
  • Size: Breast size varies greatly from person to person.
  • Nipple: Nipples come in different sizes and colors, from light pink to brownish black. [4]
  • Areola: The areola, the circular skin around the nipple, also varies in size and color. [4]
  • Consistency: Breast tissue can feel firm, soft, or lumpy, and this can vary throughout the menstrual cycle. [3, 8, 9]

Remember that a breast self-exam is a great way to get familiar with your own breasts and to notice any changes. [10] If you notice any unusual lumps, bumps, or changes in your breasts, it's important to see a doctor right away. [1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9]
