Why Does My Breast Not Have Nipples?

Published in Breast Health 1 min read

The absence of nipples on one or both breasts could be due to a rare condition called athelia.

Understanding Athelia

Athelia is a condition where a person is born without one or both nipples. While rare in the general population, it's more frequently observed in individuals born with other conditions. (Reference: 13-Mar-2018)

Possible Causes of Athelia

Athelia can occur on its own, but is more frequently associated with underlying syndromes:

  • Poland Syndrome: A rare birth defect characterized by underdeveloped chest muscles, and sometimes affects the arm, hand, and fingers on one side of the body.
  • Ectodermal Dysplasia: A group of genetic disorders affecting the development of ectodermal tissues, including skin, hair, teeth, and sweat glands.

What To Do

If you are concerned about the absence of nipples, it's important to consult with a medical professional for proper diagnosis and guidance. They can determine if athelia is present and whether it's linked to any underlying conditions.
