How Do You Use a MAM Pump?

Published in Breast Pumping 3 mins read

Using a MAM pump involves preparing the equipment and yourself, followed by the pumping action and proper storage of the milk.

Before you begin the pumping process with your MAM pump, proper preparation is key to ensuring comfort and efficiency.

Preparing for Pumping

Based on guidelines for preparing for pumping, take the following steps:

  1. Clear Milk Ducts: Squeeze a little bit of milk out of each nipple to make sure the milk ducts are not clogged. This helps ensure milk flows freely when you start pumping.
  2. Ensure Cleanliness: Ensure that all parts of the pump are clean and disinfected before use. This is crucial for maintaining hygiene and the safety of your expressed milk.
  3. Proper Assembly: Before using, make sure that the pump is properly assembled and fully screwed onto the milk collector. Check the instructions specific to your MAM pump model (manual or electric) for correct assembly.

Using the MAM Pump

Once preparation is complete, you can proceed with pumping:

  1. Find a Comfortable Spot: Choose a quiet, comfortable place where you can relax. Relaxation can help with milk flow.
  2. Position the Flange: Center the pump flange (the cone-shaped part) over your nipple, ensuring a good seal against your breast. The nipple should be centered in the tunnel of the flange.
  3. Initiate Pumping:
    • Manual Pump: Gently squeeze and release the handle to create suction. Start with a faster, lighter rhythm to stimulate letdown, then switch to a slower, deeper rhythm once milk starts flowing.
    • Electric Pump: Turn on the pump and start with a stimulation mode (faster, lighter suction) to trigger letdown. Once milk is flowing, switch to an expression mode (slower, stronger suction). Adjust the vacuum level to a comfortable setting – it should be effective but not painful.
  4. Pump Duration: Pump until the milk flow slows significantly or stops, typically 15-20 minutes per breast, though this can vary for each individual.
  5. Storing Milk: Disconnect the milk collector from the pump, cover it, and store the expressed milk according to safe storage guidelines (e.g., refrigerate immediately if not using within 4 hours, label with date and time).
  6. Cleaning After Use: After each pumping session, disassemble the pump parts and clean them thoroughly according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Proper use of your MAM pump, starting with meticulous preparation and following through with effective pumping and storage, helps ensure you safely and efficiently express milk for your baby.
