How Do You Use Reusable Breast Pads?

Published in Breastfeeding Support 2 mins read

Reusable breast pads are an eco-friendly and comfortable alternative to disposable pads. Here's how to use them:

Choosing the Right Breast Pad

  • Size and Shape: Select a breast pad appropriate for your breast size. Shaped pads often work better for smaller breasts, while flat pads tend to suit larger breasts more comfortably.
  • Material: Consider the material against your skin. Common options include cotton, bamboo, and hemp. Choose a material that's absorbent and gentle on sensitive skin.

Using Reusable Breast Pads

  1. Placement: Place the breast pad inside your bra, ensuring it covers your nipple to absorb any leakage.
  2. Changing Pads: Change your breast pads regularly, ideally every 3-4 hours or whenever you feed your baby. Replace them sooner if they become wet. Using a fresh pad prevents discomfort and reduces the risk of bacterial growth.

Washing and Caring for Reusable Breast Pads

  1. Washing Instructions: Wash reusable breast pads at 40°C (or according to the manufacturer’s instructions).
  2. Drying: Allow the pads to air dry completely before reusing them. You can also tumble dry them on a low setting, but air drying is often gentler on the fabric.
  3. Storage: Store clean, dry breast pads in a clean and dry place.

Additional Tips

  • Quantity: Have enough breast pads on hand so you're never caught short while some are in the wash. A good starting point is 6-10 pairs.
  • Leaks: If you experience heavy leakage, consider using breast pads designed for heavier flow or changing pads more frequently.

Reusable breast pads are a convenient and sustainable solution for managing breast milk leakage. Regular washing and changing will keep you comfortable and protected.
