What is the C Method in Breastfeeding?

Published in Breastfeeding Techniques 1 min read

The "C-hold" method in breastfeeding refers to a specific hand position used to support the breast and help the baby latch effectively.

Understanding the C-Hold

The C-hold helps present the nipple to the baby in an optimal position for latching. It gets its name from the shape your hand makes while using this technique.

How to Perform the C-Hold:

  • Positioning: Use your hand on the same side as the breast you are offering.
  • Hand Shape: Place your four fingers underneath your breast for support.
  • Thumb Placement: Position your thumb on top of your breast, opposite your fingers. Your hand will form a "C" shape.
  • Purpose: This hold helps you to shape and support your breast, making it easier for your baby to latch deeply and comfortably.
  • Benefit: By using your free hand to form the C-hold to present the nipple to your baby, it can enhance their ability to latch on properly.
