  3. Chest Expands: This movement makes the space inside your chest get bigger.
  4. Air Enters Lungs: The bigger space in your chest makes air rush into your lungs, like a balloon being filled. This is because air always flows from an area of higher pressure (outside) to an area of lower pressure (inside).
  5. Lungs Expand: As air flows in, your lungs get bigger.
  6. Oxygen Enters Blood: Inside your lungs are tiny air sacs called alveoli. The air you breathed in has oxygen, and the blood in the tiny blood vessels (capillaries) around these alveoli picks up the oxygen.
  7. Carbon Dioxide Released: At the same time that the blood picks up oxygen, it also gets rid of a waste gas called carbon dioxide.
  8. Air Exits Lungs: To breathe out, the diaphragm moves back up and your ribs move in, making the chest space smaller and pushing air out of your lungs, carrying the carbon dioxide.
