How to Use Brick Line?

A brick line, also known as a masonry line, helps you lay bricks in a straight, level course. Here's how to use one effectively:

Setting Up Your Brick Line

Drive Pins: Insert line pins (also called brick pins or gauge pins) into the mortar joints at each end of the wall you're building. Position them at the desired height for your brick course. Ensure the pins are securely embedded in the mortar.
Attach the Line: Securely attach the brick line to one of the pins.
Extend and Tension the Line: Extend the line across the length of the wall to the pin at the opposite end. Pull the line taut to create a straight, even guide. Consider using a line stretcher or winder for optimal tension and ease of adjustment. Some pins have a built-in winder.
Secure the Other End: Securely attach the brick line to the second pin, maintaining the tension.

Check for Level: Use a line level (a small spirit level designed to hang on a line) to verify that the brick line is level along its entire length. Adjust the height of the pins as needed until the line is perfectly level.
Maintaining Alignment: The brick line serves as a visual guide for placing your bricks. As you lay each brick, ensure that its top edge aligns with the brick line. This helps to maintain a straight and uniform course.

Choose the Right Line: Use a strong, durable masonry line that won't stretch or sag easily. Nylon or braided lines are good choices.
Adjust for Sag: Even with a taut line, some sag may occur, especially over long distances. You may need to adjust the line's height slightly in the middle to compensate.
Re-tension Regularly: Periodically check the tension of the line and re-tension if necessary. Wind can loosen the line.
Consider Using Line Blocks: Line blocks or brick clamps can be used to hold the line a precise distance above the bricks, allowing for consistent mortar joint thickness.
