How Do You Lay a Single Brick?

Published in Bricklaying 2 mins read

To lay a single brick, you apply mortar, position the brick, and ensure it's level and properly aligned. Here's a step-by-step breakdown:

  1. Prepare the Mortar Bed: Spread a layer of mortar on the foundation where the brick will be placed. The mortar should be thick enough to provide a solid base (usually about an inch), but not so thick that it oozes excessively when the brick is pressed into it.

  2. Apply Mortar to the Brick: If you're placing the brick next to another brick, you'll also need to apply mortar to the end (or "head") of the brick that will be touching the adjacent brick. This is called "buttering" the brick.

  3. Place the Brick: Carefully position the brick onto the mortar bed.

  4. Set the Brick: Press the brick firmly into the mortar. Use a twisting motion to help spread the mortar evenly beneath the brick.

  5. Level and Align: Use a level to ensure the brick is level both horizontally and vertically. You'll also want to make sure the brick is aligned with any adjacent bricks. Tap the brick gently with the trowel to adjust its position.

  6. Remove Excess Mortar: Use your trowel to scrape away any excess mortar that squeezes out from between the bricks. This excess mortar can be reused.

  7. Tool the Joints: After the mortar has begun to set slightly (but is still pliable), use a brick jointer (also called a "joint tool") to create a consistent and aesthetically pleasing finish to the mortar joints. The type of joint (concave, V-joint, etc.) is a matter of preference.
