In the autumn of 1216, King John contracted dysentery. This illness caused severe diarrhea. He was moved to Newark Castle in an attempt to recover. However, he died on October 19, 1216. There was a major thunderstorm happening at the time of his death, leading some to believe it was a sign of his wickedness.
