The process for disabling cookies varies slightly depending on the browser you are using. Here's a general guide, but refer to your browser's specific help documentation for the most accurate instructions. In general, you'll find the setting under Privacy and Security.
Here's how to do it in some popular browsers:
Google Chrome
- Click the three vertical dots (Menu) in the top-right corner of the Chrome window.
- Select Settings.
- Click on Privacy and Security in the left sidebar.
- Click on Cookies and other site data.
- Choose one of the following options:
- Block third-party cookies: This blocks cookies from websites other than the one you're currently visiting.
- Block all cookies: This blocks all cookies, which may cause some websites to not function correctly. This is the strictest option.
Mozilla Firefox
- Click the three horizontal lines (Menu) in the top-right corner of the Firefox window.
- Select Settings.
- Click on Privacy & Security in the left sidebar.
- Under Cookies and Site Data, choose the Custom option.
- Use the dropdown menus to select your desired level of cookie blocking. You can choose to block:
- Third-party trackers: Blocks cookies from known trackers.
- Cookies from unvisited websites: Blocks cookies from sites you haven't visited.
- All third-party cookies: Blocks all third-party cookies.
- All cookies: Blocks all cookies (use with caution).
Microsoft Edge
- Click the three horizontal dots (Menu) in the top-right corner of the Edge window.
- Select Settings.
- Click on Cookies and site permissions in the left sidebar.
- Click on Manage and delete cookies and site data.
- Toggle the Block third-party cookies switch to the "On" position. Or, choose "Block all cookies."
Apple Safari
- Open Safari.
- Click Safari in the menu bar, then select Preferences.
- Click the Privacy tab.
- Under Cookies and website data, select the appropriate option:
- Prevent cross-site tracking: This blocks third-party cookies.
- Block all cookies: This blocks all cookies.
Important Considerations:
- Blocking all cookies may break functionality on many websites. Consider blocking only third-party cookies for a better balance of privacy and usability.
- After disabling cookies, you might need to clear your existing cookies for the changes to fully take effect. This can usually be done in the same Privacy settings area of your browser.
- You can also manage cookies on a site-by-site basis in most browsers. This is generally done by clicking the lock icon (or the word "Secure") next to the website's address in the address bar.
