How Do I Change My Password Manager in Edge?

Published in Browser Settings 3 mins read

To change your default password manager in Microsoft Edge, follow these steps:

  1. Open Microsoft Edge. Launch the Edge browser on your computer.

  2. Access the Edge Menu. Click the three horizontal dots (the "Settings and more" menu) located in the upper-right corner of the Edge window.

  3. Go to Settings. In the dropdown menu, click on "Settings."

  4. Navigate to Password and Autofill. In the Settings menu on the left side, click on "Password and autofill." If you don't see it on the left, you may need to click on the three horizontal lines to expand the menu.

  5. Manage Passwords. Click on "Manage passwords."

At this point, Edge will display your saved passwords and offer settings related to password management. Unfortunately, you cannot directly change your default password manager from this screen. Microsoft Edge uses its built-in password manager by default.

So, how do you effectively change your password manager if you prefer using a different one like LastPass, 1Password, or Bitwarden?

The answer is that you don't "change" the Edge password manager, you disable the features that interfere with your preferred password manager extension and enable the functionality of your chosen password manager's browser extension.

Here's how to accomplish that:

  1. Install Your Preferred Password Manager Extension: Go to the Chrome Web Store (since Edge is based on Chromium) and install the browser extension for your preferred password manager (e.g., LastPass, 1Password, Bitwarden).

    • Example: Search for "LastPass" in the Chrome Web Store and click "Add to Chrome."
  2. Disable Edge's Password Saving and Autofill: In Edge's "Manage passwords" settings (reached following steps 1-5 above), disable the following options:

    • "Offer to save passwords" - Turn this off.
    • "Auto-fill passwords" - Turn this off.
  3. Enable your Preferred Password Manager Extension: Make sure your chosen password manager extension is enabled in Edge. You can usually do this by clicking the puzzle piece icon in the toolbar (Extensions) and toggling the extension to be visible. You may need to pin the extension to your toolbar for easy access. Log in to your password manager through the extension.

Why this works:

By disabling Edge's built-in password manager's features, you prevent it from interfering with your preferred password manager extension. Your chosen extension will then be able to save and autofill passwords without conflict. You may still see Edge's password suggestions in certain instances, but your primary password management will be handled by your chosen extension.
