How to Buccal Swab?

Published in Buccal Swab Procedure 2 mins read

A buccal swab is collected by rubbing a pair of swabs on the inside of your cheek.

Step-by-step guide to performing a buccal swab:

  1. Prepare the swabs: Hold the handles of the two swabs you'll be using.
  2. Position the swabs: Carefully place both swabs inside your mouth.
  3. Rub the first cheek: Use a twisting motion, rub the swabs against the inside of one of your cheeks for 10 seconds. Ensure that the impression of the swab can be seen from the outside of your cheek.
  4. Repeat on the other cheek: Using the same swabs, repeat the rubbing motion for 10 seconds on the inside of your other cheek. Again, make sure you can see the impression of the swabs from the outside of the cheek.

Tips for a successful buccal swab:

  • Avoid eating or drinking for at least 30 minutes before taking the swab to prevent contamination.
  • Use new, sterile swabs to ensure the accuracy of the sample.
  • Be gentle but firm when rubbing the swabs to collect sufficient cells.
  • Do not touch the swab head with your fingers to avoid contamination.
  • Store collected swabs as instructed in your test kit.

Following these steps will help you correctly perform a buccal swab and get accurate results.
