The foundation for a timber frame extension is most commonly a strip foundation. This type of foundation is widely used for timber frame buildings due to its effectiveness and relative simplicity.
Understanding Strip Foundations
Strip foundations are the prevailing choice and are by far the most common type of foundations used for timber frame buildings. They provide a stable and continuous base for the load-bearing walls of the structure.
Key components of a strip foundation typically include:
- Concrete Strip: A continuous level strip of concrete forms the primary base. This concrete strip supports the linear construction of the wall above.
- Brickwork: Laid on top of the concrete strip, a layer of bricks is added. As specified, a three-course layer of bricks should be laid on top of the strip below the final floor level of the extension. This brickwork brings the foundation up to the necessary level to support the timber frame while providing a barrier against ground moisture.
This construction method creates a solid and reliable base designed to distribute the weight of the timber frame extension evenly across the ground, ensuring stability and longevity.
