What is Bessemer Brick?

Published in Building materials 1 min read

Bessemer brick refers specifically to paving bricks manufactured by the Metropolitan Paving Brick Co. at their plant in Bessemer, Pennsylvania, circa 1917-1931.

While "Bessemer brick" could theoretically refer to bricks made using the Bessemer process (a steel-making process), in practice, it virtually always refers to these particular paving bricks. The Metropolitan Paving Brick Co. was formed in 1902 through the merger of the Imperial Shale Paving Brick Co. These bricks are notable for their age (over 100 years) and their origin from the Bessemer, PA, plant.
