Whether a skin burn is permanent depends on its severity and the extent of the damage.
- Minor burns: Most small, first or second-degree burns heal within one to two weeks and usually don't scar. However, some second-degree burns might cause temporary discoloration that fades within 6-9 months.
- Severe burns: Severe burns, especially third-degree burns that damage deeper layers of skin, often leave permanent scars. These scars can be raised, discolored, and may affect skin sensitivity.
The longer a burn wound remains open, the greater the risk of scarring. Studies have shown that burns typically won't scar if they heal within 14 days.
In some cases, permanent skin grafts may be required to cover large burn wounds, and these grafts can be considered a permanent treatment.
