How to Measure Drill Holes for Handles

Published in Cabinet Hardware Installation 2 mins read

Measuring drill holes for cabinet or drawer handles is a straightforward process crucial for a successful installation. The key is to determine the exact distance between the handle's mounting points.

Determining the Hole Spacing

The most critical measurement is the distance between the points where the handle attaches.

  • Measure the distance between the threaded ends of the handle. This specific measurement gives you the precise spacing needed between the two holes you will drill into the drawer or cabinet front. This distance is often referred to as the 'center-to-center' measurement.

Once you have this measurement, you can prepare the surface for marking.

Preparing the Surface and Marking

To protect your cabinet or drawer front and make marking easier:

  1. Apply Masking Tape: Place a strip of masking tape across the face of the drawer or cabinet where the handle will be installed. This prevents accidentally marking the surface directly.
  2. Find the Center: Locate and mark the center of the drawer front or cabinet door section where the handle will go. Mark both the horizontal (width) and vertical (length) centerlines. This helps ensure the handle is centered and level.
  3. Mark Hole Locations: Using the center mark as a guide and your measured handle spacing, mark the exact locations for your drill holes on the masking tape. For a handle with two holes, measure half of the center-to-center distance to the left and half to the right (or up and down) from your center mark along the horizontal or vertical centerline, depending on the handle orientation.

Practical Tips for Accuracy

  • Always double-check your measurements before drilling.
  • Use a pencil or fine-tip marker to make precise marks on the tape.
  • Consider creating a simple template for multiple identical handles.

By carefully measuring the distance between the threaded ends of your handle and using simple techniques like masking tape and finding the center, you can accurately measure and mark the locations for your drill holes.
