What size soft close hinge do I need?

Published in Cabinet Hardware 2 mins read

To determine the correct size soft close hinge, you need to know the overlay of your cabinet doors.

  • Overlay refers to how much the cabinet door overlaps the face frame.
  • The most common overlays are 1/2" for partial overlay cabinet doors and 1 1/4" for full overlay cabinet doors.
  • If you want a 1/2" overlay on all 4 sides of the cabinet opening, then you would need 1/2" overlay hinges.

For example:

  • If your cabinet doors have a 1/2" overlay, you'll need 1/2" overlay hinges.
  • If your cabinet doors have a 1 1/4" overlay, you'll need 1 1/4" overlay hinges.

You can also measure the distance from the inside of the faceframe to the outside of the door when closed to get the overlay dimension. The larger center-to-center measurement of the hinge you need will be the same as the overlay dimension.

Additional factors to consider:

  • Cabinet door thickness: Make sure the hinges are compatible with the thickness of your cabinet doors.
  • Hole diameter: The hole diameter in the door for the hinge should match the hinge size.
  • Type of cabinet: The type of cabinet (face frame or frameless) will affect the type of hinge needed.

You can find soft close hinges in various sizes and styles online and at hardware stores.
