How Do You Install Cabinet Doors Evenly?

Published in Cabinet Installation 3 mins read

Installing cabinet doors evenly is crucial for a polished and professional look in your kitchen or bathroom. The key to achieving evenness lies in precise alignment, both vertically and horizontally, before securing the hinges.

Achieving Perfect Alignment

Evenly installed cabinet doors not only look better but also function correctly, ensuring smooth opening and closing. The primary challenge is maintaining consistent spacing between doors and ensuring their edges form straight lines.

Vertical Alignment: The Base for Evenness

A simple yet effective method to ensure your cabinet doors are vertically aligned from the start is to use a support jig.

  • Use a Support Clamp: As suggested by experts, you can clamp a scrap piece along the bottom edge of the cabinets.
  • Create a Ledge: This clamped scrap piece creates a temporary ledge or base.
  • Set the Doors: You can then set the bottom edge of the cabinet doors directly on this ledge.
  • Establishes Vertical Position: Resting the doors on this clamped scrap will set the vertical positioning for all the doors. This ensures the bottom edges (or top edges if you clamp along the top) of adjacent doors remain in a nice, straight line across the cabinet run.

Horizontal Alignment and Hinge Placement

Once the vertical position is set using the clamped scrap, you can focus on the horizontal alignment.

  1. Align Left-to-Right: While the door rests on the support, adjust its position left or right as needed.
  2. Check Spacing: Ensure there is consistent spacing (the reveal) between the door and the cabinet frame, as well as between adjacent doors.
  3. Mark Hinge Locations: With the door perfectly positioned vertically and horizontally, mark the locations for your hinges on both the door and the cabinet frame.
  4. Set Your Hinges: Secure the hinges based on your markings.

Using this method ensures that before you even attach the hinges, the doors are positioned exactly where they need to be for straight, even lines.

Checking for Evenness

After installing, step back and visually inspect the doors.

  • Are the tops and bottoms in a straight line?
  • Is the spacing between doors consistent?
  • Do they open and close smoothly without rubbing?

Minor adjustments can often be made using the screws on the hinges, especially with modern adjustable hinges.

By focusing on setting a consistent vertical base using a clamped support before marking and installing hinges, you significantly increase your chances of achieving perfectly even cabinet doors.
