How Do You Use a Calligraphy Pen Ink Pump?

Published in Calligraphy Supplies 2 mins read

To use a calligraphy pen ink pump (also known as a converter): Dip the end of the converter into the ink, pull the piston upwards to fill it, and then push the filled converter firmly into the nib section until it clicks into place.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:

  1. Identify the Ink Pump (Converter): The ink pump, or converter, is a small, usually transparent, reservoir that fits into your calligraphy pen where a standard ink cartridge would go. It often has a piston mechanism to draw ink.

  2. Prepare Your Ink: Open your bottle of calligraphy ink. Ensure the ink bottle is stable and won't easily tip over.

  3. Insert the Empty Converter (If Not Already): If the converter isn't already installed in your pen, carefully insert the open end (the end without the piston knob) firmly into the section of the pen that holds the nib. Push until you feel it click or seat properly.

  4. Submerge the Converter's Nozzle: Dip the nib end of your calligraphy pen into the ink bottle, ensuring that the entire nozzle of the converter (the open end of the converter inside the pen) is fully submerged in the ink.

  5. Draw Ink into the Converter:

    • Piston Mechanism: Slowly twist or pull the piston knob at the end of the converter upwards (or backwards) to draw ink into the reservoir. Fill it completely.
    • Push the ink out and then refill slowly: This will help clear out any air bubbles that get trapped in the converter.
  6. Expel Air and Final Fill: Once the converter is full, gently twist the piston knob to release a few drops of ink back into the bottle. This helps eliminate any trapped air bubbles. Then, slowly refill the converter completely.

  7. Wipe Excess Ink: Carefully remove the pen from the ink bottle and wipe any excess ink from the nib and section of the pen with a soft, lint-free cloth or paper towel.

  8. Begin Writing: Your calligraphy pen is now inked and ready to use!
