How do I set my iPhone Camera to default settings?

Published in Camera Settings 3 mins read

To reset your iPhone camera to its default settings, you need to manage the "Preserve Settings" option in your camera settings, as the iPhone camera does not have a direct "reset to default" button. Here's how to do it:

Steps to Manage Preserve Settings:

The iPhone camera remembers your last-used settings so you may need to adjust the Preserve Settings to return to defaults. The following steps will help you achieve this:

  1. Open the Settings app: Locate and tap the "Settings" app icon on your iPhone's home screen.

  2. Scroll and tap "Camera": Scroll down through the settings menu until you find the "Camera" option, then tap on it.

  3. Tap "Preserve Settings": Under the Camera settings, tap on "Preserve Settings".

  4. Toggle off desired settings: Within "Preserve Settings" you will see several options. Each of these options can be toggled off, so that your camera does not "remember" these settings.

    • Camera Mode: This controls whether the camera remembers the last used photo or video mode.
    • Creative Controls: This controls if filters, ratios, lighting and other settings are remembered.
    • Exposure Adjustment: This controls whether the exposure compensation settings are remembered.
    • Night Mode: This controls if night mode settings are remembered.
    • Live Photo: This controls if Live Photo is enabled by default.
  5. Exit Settings: Once you’ve turned off all of the options in "Preserve Settings," your camera will revert to defaults when you exit and re-enter the Camera app.

Understanding "Preserve Settings"

The "Preserve Settings" feature is designed to remember the adjustments you make to the Camera app. This includes:

  • Camera Mode: If you last used the video mode, the camera will open directly in the video mode the next time, as shown in the reference.
  • Creative Controls: Things like filters or aspect ratios will be kept as they were.
  • Exposure Adjustment: The brightness setting you last used will be kept.
  • Night Mode: This will remain on/off based on your last use.
  • Live Photo: If you had this enabled, it will remember it.

By turning these off in the "Preserve Settings", the camera will not maintain your settings and instead will go to defaults each time you exit and re-open the Camera app.
