How Do You Make Wax Melts with Old Candle Wax?

Published in Candle Making 2 mins read

You can easily repurpose old candle wax into new wax melts using a few simple steps. Here's how:

  1. Melt the Old Wax: Use a double boiler. Place all your collected leftover candle wax into the top bowl and gently melt it over low heat. This indirect heat prevents scorching. Alternatively, you can use a heat-safe bowl set over a pot of simmering water.

  2. Add Fragrance (Optional): Once the wax is completely melted, remove the top bowl from the heat. If you want to add a scent, incorporate fragrance oils from a candle-making kit, essential oils, or other compatible fragrance sources. Stir the fragrance into the melted wax thoroughly to ensure even distribution. A typical ratio is around 6-10% fragrance oil to wax.

  3. Pour into Molds: Carefully pour the scented (or unscented) melted wax into cube molds or other desired shapes. Silicone molds work best for easy removal.

  4. Cool and Harden: Let the wax melts cool and harden completely at room temperature. This typically takes several hours. Avoid placing them in the refrigerator or freezer, as this can cause the wax to crack or not set properly.

  5. Remove from Molds: Once the wax melts are fully hardened, gently pop them out of the molds. They are now ready to use in a wax warmer.

Important Considerations:

  • Type of Wax: Different waxes have different melting points and fragrance holding capabilities. Paraffin wax, soy wax, and beeswax can all be used, but mixing them might affect the final product's performance.
  • Wick Removal: Ensure all wicks and wick clips are removed from the old candle wax before melting.
  • Scent Compatibility: When adding new fragrances, ensure they are compatible with the type of wax you are using.
  • Safety: Always use caution when working with hot wax. Wear appropriate safety gear, such as oven mitts, and work in a well-ventilated area.
  • Cleaning: To clean your double boiler or melting pot, pour out the wax while it's still liquid and wipe the remaining residue with paper towels. Then wash with soap and water.
