How to Prepare Jelly Jars for Canning

Published in Canning Preparation 2 mins read

Preparing jelly jars for canning involves thoroughly cleaning and heating them and their lids to ensure they are ready for sealing and preservation. The process focuses on cleanliness and sanitization to prevent spoilage.

To prepare jelly jars and their lids for canning, follow these steps which involve washing and using heat methods to sanitize them:

  • Wash Thoroughly: Begin by washing each canning jar (also known as mason jars) and their lids with hot soapy water.
  • Rinse Well: After washing, rinse them thoroughly with hot water. Do not dry the jars or lids manually with a towel, as this could reintroduce contaminants.
  • Heat Jars: Place the clean, still-wet jars on a baking tray. Preheat your oven to 275 degrees. Once preheated, place the tray of jars in the oven for 10 minutes. This dry heat helps to sanitize the jars.
  • Heat Lids: While the jars are in the oven, soak the lids (the flat part with the sealing compound) in boiling water for five minutes. The boiling water method sanitizes the lids and helps soften the sealing compound for a better seal.

By following these steps, your jelly jars and lids will be properly prepared and sanitized, ready to be filled with your hot jelly and sealed for safe preservation.
