How do I rotate a workspace in Canva?

Published in Canva Tutorials 2 mins read

To rotate the entire workspace (i.e., the canvas itself) in Canva, you'll effectively resize it, swapping the height and width dimensions. Canva doesn't offer a direct "rotate" button for the workspace. Here's how to achieve the rotation effect:

Steps to "Rotate" Your Canva Workspace

  1. Open or Create a Design: Begin by opening an existing Canva design or creating a new one.

  2. Access the Resize Option: Look for the "Resize" option, usually located in the top menu bar, above the editor.

  3. Swap Height and Width: Clicking "Resize" will display the design's dimensions (width and height). To "rotate" your design, simply switch the values of the height and width. For example, if your design is 1080px wide and 1920px tall, change it to 1920px wide and 1080px tall. You can enter these values in the "Custom size" section.

  4. Copy and Resize (Recommended): Click the "Copy & resize" button. This creates a new copy of your design with the rotated dimensions, preserving your original design.

Alternatively, if you don't want to keep the original design, click "Resize" (instead of "Copy & resize"). Be aware that this will permanently change the dimensions of your current design.

Important Considerations:

  • Content Adjustment: After resizing, you might need to adjust the elements within your design to fit the new orientation. Canva usually does a decent job of scaling, but you should always double-check and make manual adjustments.
  • Preset Options: Canva also offers preset dimensions (e.g., Instagram Post, Presentation). If the desired "rotated" dimensions match a preset, you can select that instead of manually entering the values.

Example:

Let's say you have a portrait design (1080px width x 1920px height).

  1. Go to Resize.
  2. Change the dimensions to 1920px width x 1080px height.
  3. Click "Copy & resize".

Now, you will have a copy of your design rotated into a landscape orientation. Make any necessary adjustments to the design elements.
