How Do I Split a Graphic in Canva?

Published in Canva Tutorials 3 mins read

To split a graphic in Canva, you'll essentially be creating multiple cropped versions of the original image to simulate a split effect. Here's how:

  1. Duplicate the Image: For each section you want to create from the original graphic (i.e., how many "splits" you want), make a duplicate of the image. You can do this by selecting the image and clicking the "Duplicate" icon (often looks like two overlapping squares) in the toolbar above the Canva editor.

  2. Edit Image and Crop: Select one of the duplicated images. In the toolbar above the editor, click "Edit image." After clicking "Edit image", look for a "Crop" button or tool. It might be directly visible or within a sub-menu depending on your Canva interface version.

  3. Crop Each Image: Use the crop tool to define the specific section of the original graphic that this duplicate will represent. For example, if you want to split the image into three equal vertical sections, crop the first duplicate to only show the leftmost third, the second duplicate to show the middle third, and the third duplicate to show the rightmost third. Adjust the cropping handles to achieve the desired section.

  4. Position the Sections: Carefully position the cropped sections next to each other on your Canva design to recreate the appearance of the original graphic, but now "split." You can adjust the spacing between the sections as desired to enhance the split effect.

Example:

Let's say you want to split a photo of a mountain range into two vertical sections.

  1. Duplicate the mountain range photo. You'll now have two identical photos.
  2. Select the first photo, and go to "Edit Image" and find the "Crop" tool.
  3. Crop the first photo to only show the left half of the mountain range.
  4. Select the second photo, and go to "Edit Image" and find the "Crop" tool.
  5. Crop the second photo to only show the right half of the mountain range.
  6. Position the two cropped halves next to each other on your Canva design. You've now "split" the mountain range photo.

This technique works for any graphic you want to split, whether it's a photo, an illustration, or a shape. Just remember to duplicate the graphic for each section and carefully crop and position each piece.
