How to Attach a Canvas to a Board

Published in Canvas Board Preparation 2 mins read

To attach a canvas to a board or panel, the standard method is using a suitable adhesive.

Attaching canvas to a rigid panel is a common practice for creating a stable and durable painting surface, sometimes referred to as a canvas panel or canvas-covered board.

Method: Gluing Canvas to Panels

The primary technique involves using an adhesive to create a strong bond between the canvas and the board.

  • You can use an archival glue or a heavy acrylic gel medium specifically designed for this purpose to glue canvas to a panel. These adhesives provide a durable bond suitable for artistic applications.

Panel Preparation

Proper preparation of the board or panel before attaching the canvas can enhance the longevity and stability of the final piece.

  • Sealing: Some artists prefer to seal the panels first. A recommended method involves applying 2 coats of GAC 100 from Golden. This sealant helps block support-induced discoloration (SID) and creates a stable surface for the adhesive.
  • Seal All Sides: It is crucial to seal all sides of the panel. This is particularly important when using materials like MDF or hardboard, as sealing helps protect them from moisture changes that could cause warping or degradation over time. Once the sealant is dry, the panel is ready for the canvas to be glued on.

Using the right adhesive and preparing the panel properly ensures a stable surface that is ready for painting.
