How Do You Hang Stretch Canvas?

Published in Canvas Hanging 3 mins read

Hanging a stretch canvas typically involves attaching eye hooks and wire to the back of the canvas and then using the wire to hang the canvas on a nail or hook. Here's a step-by-step guide:

Steps to Hang a Stretch Canvas:

  1. Gather your materials: You will need:

    • Eye hooks (size appropriate for your canvas weight)
    • Picture hanging wire (strong enough to support the canvas)
    • Nails or picture hooks (for the wall)
    • Screwdriver (if the eye hooks require it)
    • Pencil
    • Ruler or measuring tape (optional, for precise placement)
  2. Position the eye hooks:

    • On the back of the canvas frame, measure approximately one-third of the way down from the top edge on both the left and right sides.
    • Mark these locations with a pencil.
    • These marks indicate where you'll attach the eye hooks. Positioning the hooks lower creates a more secure and visually balanced hang.
  3. Attach the eye hooks:

    • Screw the eye hooks into the marked locations. Make sure they are securely fastened, but avoid overtightening, which could damage the frame. If your canvas frame is particularly hard, you might need to start a small pilot hole with a drill or awl.
  4. String the hanging wire:

    • Cut a length of picture hanging wire, giving yourself ample length for adjustments. It's always better to have too much than not enough.
    • Thread one end of the wire through the eye hook on one side.
    • Wrap the wire around itself several times to secure it. Leave a tail of wire and twist it around the main wire for extra hold.
    • Repeat this process on the other side, threading the wire through the other eye hook.
    • Before securing the second end, adjust the wire so that it creates a gentle "U" shape when the canvas is hanging. Too tight of a wire will put unnecessary stress on the frame, and too loose will make the canvas sit awkwardly on the wall.
  5. Secure the second end of the wire:

    • Once you're satisfied with the wire's tension, wrap the wire around itself several times at the second eye hook, just like you did on the first side.
    • Again, leave a tail of wire and twist it around the main wire for added security.
  6. Hang the canvas:

    • Choose the location on the wall where you want to hang the canvas.
    • Hammer a nail into the wall or install a picture hook at the desired height. Use a level to ensure the nail/hook is straight.
    • Carefully hang the canvas by placing the wire over the nail or hook.
  7. Adjust (if necessary):

    • Step back and examine the canvas. Ensure it is hanging straight. If not, make minor adjustments to the wire or the placement of the nail/hook on the wall.

By following these steps, you can securely and attractively hang your stretch canvas artwork.
