How Do I Record a Video on Canvas?

Published in Canvas Video Recording 2 mins read

Recording a video directly within Canvas is a convenient way to create multimedia content for assignments, discussions, or announcements. This process typically utilizes Canvas's built-in media recording tool, often found within the Rich Content Editor (RCE).

To record a video on Canvas using the built-in tool, follow these simple steps:

  1. Locate the Media Icon: Navigate to where you want to add the video (e.g., an assignment submission box, a discussion post, or a page). Look for the Rich Content Editor. Within the editor toolbar, find the Record/Upload Media icon. It usually looks like a play button or a microphone/camera icon.
  2. Select Recording Option: Click the dropdown arrow located next to the Record/Upload Media icon. This will present you with options like uploading existing media or recording new media.
  3. Initiate Recording: Click the Record tab (or the specific option for recording video).
  4. Grant Permissions: Your web browser will likely display a prompt requesting permission to access your webcam and microphone. You must grant these permissions for the recording tool to function.
  5. Prepare to Record: Once permissions are granted, you should now see your web camera view displayed within the Canvas interface. Ensure your lighting and framing are suitable.
  6. Start and Stop Recording: Look for a "Start Recording" button (often a red circle). Click it to begin recording. Click the button again (which may change to a square "Stop Recording" icon) when you are finished.
  7. Review and Save: After stopping the recording, you may have the option to preview it. When complete, be sure to title your video appropriately so you can easily identify it later. Finally, click Save or "Save Media" to embed or attach the video to your Canvas content.

This built-in tool is ideal for quick recordings without needing external software. Remember that the availability and exact appearance of the media recording tool may vary slightly depending on your institution's Canvas configuration and your role in the course.
