How Do You Stretch Elastic Caps?

Published in Cap Stretching 2 mins read

You can effectively stretch elastic caps using a method often called the "Towel Method," which leverages warm water and gentle tension to expand the elastic band.

The Towel Method for Stretching Cap Bands

This technique is simple and effective for expanding the elastic band of a cap that feels too tight. It utilizes the properties of warm water to make the fibers more pliable and then holds them in a stretched position while they dry. This method is specifically designed for the elastic band, which is the part of the cap that provides the snug fit.

Here are the steps involved:

  1. Dampen a Towel: Get a towel damp with warm water. It should be moist, but not soaking wet.
  2. Wrap the Band: Wrap the damp towel around the inside of the cap's elastic band.
  3. Apply Stretch: Gently stretch the cap by hand, focusing on the band area. Alternatively, and often more effectively, place the cap onto a larger-sized object. Good options include:
    • A large can
    • A ball (like a soccer ball or basketball)
    • A small bowl or pot
This object will expand its circumference and hold the desired stretch.
  4. Air Dry: Allow the cap to air dry completely while it remains stretched (either through manual tension or while resting on the object).

Using an object to maintain the stretch during drying is often easier as it provides consistent tension. Ensure the object is clean and slightly larger than the cap's current size to achieve the desired expansion without causing damage.
