How do I customize my Capture One workspace?

Published in Capture One Workspace 4 mins read

To customize your Capture One workspace, you primarily start by exploring existing layouts via the menu and then manually rearrange elements to create your ideal environment.

Explore and Switch Workspaces

Capture One offers several pre-configured workspaces designed for different workflows. You can easily switch between these to find a layout that suits your needs or serves as a starting point for customization.

  • Access Workspace Options: You can experiment with various workspaces by selecting Window - Workspace and select an option that best fits your workflow.
  • Pre-defined Layouts: This menu provides a list of built-in workspaces like 'Default', 'Migration', 'Simplified', and others.
  • Maximize Workspace: There are two primary layout modes that can be quickly selected when you need to maximize the workspace for viewing or browsing:
    • Viewer only: Hides all tool tabs and browser to maximize the image view.
    • Browser only: Hides tool tabs and viewer to maximize the browser view (e.g., for culling images).

Manually Customize Your Layout

Beyond selecting a preset, true customization involves rearranging the interface elements. Capture One's workspace is highly flexible, allowing you to move, resize, and hide most panels and tools.

Arranging Tool Tabs and Tools

The main interface typically features Tool Tabs (like Exposure, Color, Details) and the tools contained within them.

  • Move Tool Tabs: You can drag and drop entire tool tabs (the icons on the left or right side) to rearrange their order.
  • Move Individual Tools: Tools within a tab can often be dragged from one tab to another. Click and drag the header of a tool to move it.
  • Create Floating Tools/Tabs: Drag a tool or a tool tab away from the main panel to make it a floating window. This is useful for placing frequently used tools on a second monitor or keeping them visible alongside other tabs.
  • Dock Floating Windows: Drag a floating tool or tab back to the edge of a tool area until you see a docking indicator.
  • Remove Tools/Tabs: Right-click on a tool header or tool tab header. You'll usually find options to "Remove Tool" or "Remove Tab".

Adjusting Panels and Viewer

  • Resize Panels: Drag the edges of the Browser, Tool Tabs panel, or Viewer to change their size.
  • Hide Panels: Go to the Window menu. You'll find options to hide specific panels like the Browser or Tool Tabs. Keyboard shortcuts are often available for quick toggling (e.g., Cmd+B or Ctrl+B for Browser).

Adding Tools

If you've removed a tool or want to add one that isn't in your current layout:

  1. Right-click on the header area of any tool tab.
  2. Select Add Tool.
  3. Choose the desired tool from the list.
  4. The tool will be added to that tab, and you can then drag it elsewhere if needed.

Similarly, to add a new Tool Tab:

  1. Right-click on the header area of the existing tool tabs panel.
  2. Select Add Tool Tab.
  3. Choose from predefined tabs (like Metadata, Adjustments Clipboard) or Add Empty Tool Tab to build one from scratch.

Saving Your Custom Workspace

Once you've arranged your tools and panels exactly how you like them, you should save the layout. This allows you to easily switch back to it later.

  1. Go to Window > Workspace.
  2. Select Save Workspace....
  3. Give your custom workspace a descriptive name.
  4. Click Save.

Your custom workspace will now appear in the Window > Workspace menu.

Managing Saved Workspaces

You can manage the workspaces you've saved:

  1. Go to Window > Workspace.
  2. Select Manage Workspaces....
  3. In the dialog box, you can:
    • Rename a custom workspace.
    • Delete a custom workspace.
    • Reset Capture One's built-in workspaces back to their default state (this does not affect your saved custom workspaces).
Workspace Type Description Location in Menu
Built-in Pre-configured layouts by Capture One Window > Workspace
Custom Layouts you have saved after customization Window > Workspace (appears below built-in)
Special Modes Layouts optimizing space for Viewer or Browser Window > Workspace

By following these steps, you can create a Capture One workspace that is perfectly tailored to your specific editing workflow, helping you work more efficiently.
