How do you use a smooth surface clay kit?

Published in Car Detailing 2 mins read

Using a smooth surface clay kit involves cleaning and lubricating the surface, and then gently gliding the clay bar to remove contaminants. Here's a breakdown of the process:

  1. Prepare the Surface: Ensure the vehicle is washed and dried thoroughly before starting the claying process. This removes loose dirt and debris.
  2. Lubricate the Surface: Apply a generous amount of clay lubricant (often included in the kit) to a small section of the vehicle's surface. This is crucial to prevent the clay from scratching the paint. The lubricant allows the clay bar to glide smoothly.
  3. Work the Clay: Flatten the clay bar into a manageable disc. Gently glide the clay bar back and forth over the lubricated area, using light pressure. You'll feel the clay bar picking up contaminants.
  4. Knead the Clay: As the clay bar picks up contaminants, it will become dirty. Knead the clay periodically to expose a clean surface. Fold the dirty side into itself, creating a new, clean surface to work with. This rejuvenates the clay and allows it to pick up more contaminants effectively.
  5. Wipe Away Residue: After claying a section, wipe away any remaining lubricant with a clean microfiber towel.
  6. Repeat: Continue working in small sections, overlapping each area slightly, until the entire surface is treated.
  7. Final Inspection: After claying, inspect the surface to ensure all areas are smooth. You can follow up with a polish and wax for added protection and shine.
