Pumping tyre pressure involves connecting an air source to the tyre valve, checking the current pressure, adding air until you reach the recommended pressure, and then disconnecting. Here's a breakdown of the process:

  1. Find the Recommended Tyre Pressure: This information is usually found on a sticker located on the driver's side doorjamb, in the owner's manual, or sometimes on the fuel filler door. Do not exceed the maximum pressure listed on the tyre sidewall.
  2. Remove the Valve Cap: Unscrew the cap from the tyre's valve stem and set it aside in a safe place.
  3. Connect the Air Hose: Attach the air hose nozzle (from an air compressor or tyre inflator) firmly onto the valve stem. You might hear a slight hissing sound, which indicates air is escaping until a proper seal is formed.
  4. Check the Initial Pressure: The gauge on the air compressor or inflator will display the current pressure in your tyre. Note this reading.
  5. Inflate to the Correct Pressure: Squeeze the trigger or button on the inflator to add air to the tyre. Keep an eye on the pressure gauge and release the trigger when you reach the recommended pressure. It's best to slightly overinflate (1-2 PSI) and then release air if needed, as checking the pressure can release a small amount of air.
  6. Check the Pressure Again: After inflating, remove the air hose and use a separate tyre pressure gauge to double-check the pressure. This ensures accuracy.
  7. Adjust if Necessary: If the pressure is too high, gently press the valve stem with the back of the gauge to release small bursts of air until you reach the correct pressure. If it's too low, reattach the air hose and add more air.
  8. Replace the Valve Cap: Screw the valve cap back onto the valve stem. This protects the valve from dirt and debris.
  9. Repeat for Other Tyres: Repeat the process for each tyre, including the spare if applicable.

By following these steps, you can effectively pump tyre pressure and maintain the optimal inflation for your vehicle's tyres. This contributes to better fuel efficiency, handling, and tyre life.
