How Do You Use Concentrated Screen Wash?

Published in Car Maintenance 3 mins read

Using concentrated screen wash effectively requires dilution with water before adding it to your car's washer fluid reservoir. Unlike pre-mixed screen wash, the concentrated formula contains a higher percentage of cleaning agents and often antifreeze components, making it much stronger and requiring activation by adding water.

Why Dilute Concentrated Screen Wash?

Concentrated screen wash is designed to be mixed with water to achieve the correct strength for cleaning your windscreen and preventing the fluid from freezing in cold temperatures. Adding concentrate without dilution can potentially damage your washer system components, such as the pump or seals, and won't function correctly.

How to Dilute Concentrated Screen Wash

The correct dilution ratio depends on the specific product and the temperature conditions you expect. Always check the instructions on the screen wash bottle for the recommended ratio. Common ratios are often listed for different temperature ranges.

Here is a typical guide, but always refer to your product's label:

Temperature Range Typical Dilution Ratio (Screen Wash:Water) Description
Above Freezing (e.g., Summer) 1:10 or 1:20 Weaker mix for basic cleaning.
Mild Winter (e.g., 0°C) 1:1 or 1:2 Stronger mix for light frost.
Severe Winter (e.g., -10°C+) Undiluted or 2:1 (Screen Wash:Water) Maximum frost protection (check label!).

Mix the screen wash concentrate with the correct amount of water in a separate clean container before adding it to your car's reservoir.

Important: Use clean, preferably filtered or deionised water, especially in hard water areas. Tap water contains minerals that can build up and clog the washer jets over time.

Adding the Diluted Mixture to Your Car

Once you have prepared the diluted screen wash mixture according to the product instructions, you are ready to add it to your car's screen wash reservoir.

Here's how to locate and fill the reservoir:

  • With the engine off open the bonnet.
  • And find the washer bottle. It usually has a blue cap with a windscreen symbol.

This reservoir is where you will pour the diluted screen wash.

  1. Open the cap: Lift or unscrew the blue cap.
  2. Pour carefully: Use a funnel if necessary to pour the diluted screen wash mixture into the reservoir opening.
  3. Fill appropriately: Add the mixture until the fluid level reaches the 'Max' line, or simply fill it up, leaving a little room to prevent spills. Do not overfill.
  4. Replace cap: Securely close the blue cap.
  5. Close bonnet: Ensure the bonnet is properly latched.

You can now use your car's screen wash function to clean your windscreen effectively. Using concentrated screen wash correctly ensures optimal cleaning performance and protects your system against freezing.
