How to Jump Car Battery?

Published in Car Maintenance 3 mins read

To jump-start a car battery, you'll need jumper cables and a working vehicle. Here's a step-by-step guide:

Step-by-Step Guide to Jump-Starting a Car Battery

  1. Prepare the Vehicles: Park the working car close enough to the car with the dead battery that the jumper cables can reach both batteries. Ensure both cars are turned off.

  2. Connect the Red Clamps:

    • Attach one red clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the dead battery.
    • Attach the other red clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the working battery.
  3. Connect the Black Clamps:

    • Attach one black clamp to the negative (-) terminal of the working battery.
    • Attach the final black clamp to an unpainted metal surface on the car with the dead battery. This could be a bolt on the engine block or another suitable grounding point. Do not connect directly to the negative terminal of the dead battery to avoid potential sparks igniting any hydrogen gas that may have accumulated around the battery.
  4. Start the Working Car: Start the engine of the car with the good battery and let it run for a few minutes. This allows the working car to charge the dead battery.

  5. Attempt to Start the Car with the Dead Battery: Try starting the car with the dead battery. If it starts, let it run for at least 20 minutes to allow the alternator to recharge the battery. If it doesn't start after a few tries, the battery may be too far gone and might need to be replaced.

  6. Disconnect the Jumper Cables (in Reverse Order): Once the car with the dead battery is running, carefully disconnect the jumper cables in the reverse order you connected them:

    • Remove the black clamp from the unpainted metal surface.
    • Remove the black clamp from the negative (-) terminal of the working battery.
    • Remove the red clamp from the positive (+) terminal of the working battery.
    • Remove the red clamp from the positive (+) terminal of the previously dead battery.
  7. Let the Car Run: After jump-starting, let the revived car run for at least 20-30 minutes to allow the alternator to sufficiently recharge the battery. Consider driving it for a longer period to ensure a full charge.

Important Safety Precautions:

  • Wear Safety Glasses: Protect your eyes from potential sparks or battery acid.
  • Avoid Smoking or Open Flames: Hydrogen gas can be released from batteries, creating an explosion hazard.
  • Ensure Correct Connections: Connecting the cables in the wrong order can damage the electrical systems of both vehicles.
  • Check the Owner's Manuals: Consult the owner's manuals for both vehicles for any specific jump-starting instructions or recommendations.
  • If Unsure, Seek Professional Help: If you're not comfortable jump-starting a car battery, contact a professional mechanic or roadside assistance service.
