How Do You Use Stone Chip Paint?

Published in Car Paint Repair 3 mins read

To use stone chip paint for repairing small paint chips on your car, follow these steps:

1. Prepare the Area

  • Clean: Thoroughly clean the chipped area and the surrounding paintwork with soap and water to remove any dirt, grease, or contaminants.
  • Degrease: Rub down the area with isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) or white spirit to ensure a grease-free surface for optimal paint adhesion. This step is crucial for preventing the paint from peeling later.

2. Sand the Edges

  • Smooth: Carefully sand down any raised edges around the chip using fine-grit sandpaper (e.g., 2000 grit or higher). This creates a smooth transition between the existing paint and the repair, minimizing the appearance of the chip. Be gentle and avoid scratching the surrounding paint.

3. Apply Primer (If Necessary)

  • Primer (Optional): If the chip has exposed bare metal or is deep, apply a thin layer of automotive primer specifically designed for car paint. Let it dry completely according to the manufacturer's instructions. Primer helps with adhesion and corrosion protection.

4. Apply the Stone Chip Paint

  • Thin Layers: Apply the stone chip paint in very thin layers, allowing each layer to dry completely before applying the next. This prevents runs and ensures a smooth, even finish. Use the applicator provided with the paint or a fine-tipped brush.
  • Build Up: Build up the paint gradually until it is level with the surrounding paintwork. It's better to apply multiple thin coats than one thick coat.
  • Drying Time: Allow ample drying time between coats and after the final coat, as specified by the paint manufacturer.

5. Apply Clear Coat (Optional)

  • Protection and Shine: After the paint has completely dried, consider applying a thin layer of clear coat for added protection and a glossy finish. Follow the same application process as with the paint (thin layers, adequate drying time).

6. Polishing (Optional)

  • Blend: Once the clear coat (if used) is fully cured, you can lightly polish the repaired area to blend it seamlessly with the surrounding paintwork. Use a fine-cut polishing compound and a soft cloth or polishing pad.

Important Considerations:

  • Color Matching: Ensure the stone chip paint precisely matches your car's paint code. This is usually found on a sticker located in the door jamb, glove box, or under the hood.
  • Working Environment: Work in a well-ventilated area with good lighting. Avoid applying the paint in direct sunlight or extreme temperatures.
  • Practice: Practice on an inconspicuous area first to get a feel for the paint and application technique.
