How do you adjust the side mirrors on an SUV?

Published in Car Safety 2 mins read

Adjusting your SUV's side mirrors properly minimizes blind spots and enhances safety. The goal is to see the area next to your vehicle without overlapping too much with the rearview mirror's view.

Steps to Adjust Your SUV's Side Mirrors:

  1. Start with the Driver's Side Mirror:

    • Sit in the driver's seat in your normal driving position.
    • Lean your head to the left until it almost touches the driver's side window.
    • Adjust the driver's side mirror so that you can just barely see the side of your SUV in the inside edge of the mirror. This minimizes the overlap with your rearview mirror.
  2. Adjust the Passenger's Side Mirror:

    • Lean your head to the right, towards the center of the vehicle.
    • Adjust the passenger's side mirror so you can just barely see the side of your SUV in the inside edge of the mirror.
  3. Check Your Work:

    • Once you've adjusted both mirrors, sit in your normal driving position.
    • You should barely see the sides of your SUV in either side mirror.
    • When a car passes you on either side, you should see it in your rearview mirror first, then in the corresponding side mirror, and then in your peripheral vision. There should be minimal overlap between these views.
  4. Rearview Mirror Adjustment: Ensure you can see the entire back window through your rearview mirror, providing a clear view of what's directly behind you.

This method helps eliminate traditional blind spots, making driving safer. Remember to adjust your mirrors each time a new driver uses the vehicle. The video suggests that during parking the back door handle can be seen in the center of the mirror.
