What is the Aortic Valve Called?

Published in Cardiology 1 min read

The aortic valve is also called the aortic semilunar valve.

This alternate name stems from the valve's distinct shape. The leaflets (flaps) that make up the aortic valve resemble half-moons, or "semilunars." This semilunar shape allows the valve to effectively open and close, ensuring unidirectional blood flow from the left ventricle into the aorta, preventing backflow into the heart.
