This alternate name stems from the valve's distinct shape. The leaflets (flaps) that make up the aortic valve resemble half-moons, or "semilunars." This semilunar shape allows the valve to effectively open and close, ensuring unidirectional blood flow from the left ventricle into the aorta, preventing backflow into the heart.
