How to Change an Adult Diaper

Published in Caregiving 3 mins read

Changing an adult diaper is similar to changing a baby's diaper; it requires a clean, comfortable space, the right supplies, and a gentle approach. Here's a step-by-step guide:

Preparation

  • Gather Supplies: You'll need:

    • A clean adult diaper
    • Disposable gloves
    • Wipes (fragrance-free and alcohol-free are best) or a washcloth and warm water
    • Barrier cream (if needed)
    • A disposable underpad or towel to protect the changing surface
    • A disposal bag
  • Prepare the Environment: Choose a safe, flat surface like a bed or changing table. Cover it with a disposable underpad or towel.

  • Communicate: Explain to the individual what you are going to do. This helps them feel more comfortable and involved.

The Changing Process

  1. Put on Gloves: This protects you from germs.

  2. Position the Person: Ideally, the person should be lying down. If they can assist, ask them to bend their knees.

  3. Unfasten the Diaper: Undo the tabs or fasteners on the existing diaper.

  4. Clean the Area:

    • Front to Back: Just like with babies, always wipe from front to back to prevent the spread of bacteria.
    • Use Gentle Wipes: Use gentle, fragrance-free wipes to clean the perineal area. Alternatively, use a soft washcloth with warm water.
    • Pat Dry: Gently pat the skin dry. Avoid rubbing, as this can cause irritation.
  5. Check for Skin Irritation: Look for redness, rashes, or sores. Apply a barrier cream if necessary to protect the skin.

  6. Apply New Diaper:

    • Fold the Diaper: Fold the new diaper lengthwise.
    • Position Diaper: Gently roll the person onto their side and tuck one side of the folded diaper underneath them. Bring the diaper between their legs and spread it open in the front.
    • Secure the Diaper: Roll the person onto their back. Pull the front of the diaper up and over their lower abdomen. Secure the tabs or fasteners, ensuring a snug but comfortable fit. The diaper should be snug enough to prevent leaks, but not so tight that it restricts circulation or causes discomfort.
  7. Dispose of the Old Diaper: Roll up the soiled diaper (inward to contain the mess), secure it with the tabs, and dispose of it in a disposal bag.

  8. Remove Gloves: Remove your gloves and dispose of them properly.

  9. Wash Hands: Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.

Important Considerations

  • Dignity and Respect: Always treat the person with dignity and respect. Be mindful of their privacy and comfort.
  • Skin Care: Regular diaper changes and proper skin care are crucial to prevent skin breakdown and infections.
  • Regular Changes: Change the diaper as soon as it's soiled to prevent skin irritation.
  • Seek Professional Advice: If you notice any persistent skin problems or have concerns about changing the diaper, consult a healthcare professional.
