How to Edge Carpet to Make a Rug?

Published in Carpet Binding 2 mins read

Edging carpet to create a finished rug involves applying a binding to the cut edges to prevent fraying and give it a clean look. A common method uses adhesive binding tape, which is a straightforward way to achieve a professional finish.

Finishing Carpet Edges with Adhesive Binding Tape

Creating a custom rug from a piece of carpet is easily done by applying binding tape to the cut edges. This process seals the raw edge and provides durability. Using an adhesive binding tape simplifies the task significantly.

Step-by-Step Process

To edge your carpet using adhesive binding tape, follow these steps:

  1. Prepare the Carpet: Ensure the edges of your carpet piece are cut straight and clean. Lay the carpet flat on a stable surface.
  2. Begin Application: Peel off a section of the adhesive backing from the binding tape.
  3. Position the Tape: Slide the peeled section of the binding tape under the rug so that the fold of the binding tape meets the very edge of the rug. The adhesive side should face down on the underside of the rug, and the binding should wrap around the edge.
  4. Continue Around: Press the adhesive side firmly onto the underside of the carpet and continue working your way all the way around the rug, peeling off sections of backing as you go and sliding the binding under the edge.
  5. Handle Corners: Corners require careful handling. At each corner, cut a line through the binding tape. This cut should go right up to where the fabric of the binding changes, essentially allowing the tape to flex. Then, bend the binding around the corner, aligning it neatly along the adjacent edge.
  6. Secure the Binding: Once the tape is applied around the entire perimeter, firmly press the binding along both the top edge (the part visible on the rug's surface) and the adhesive part on the underside to ensure it is securely attached.

This method utilizes the adhesive to create a durable edge, transforming a simple piece of carpet into a finished rug.
