How to Vacuum New Carpet?

Published in Carpet Cleaning 3 mins read

Vacuuming new carpet requires a slightly different approach than vacuuming older carpet to prevent damage and excess fuzzing. Here's how to do it correctly:

1. Initial Vacuuming (First Few Weeks):

  • Vacuum frequently: New carpets shed loose fibers, so vacuum 2-3 times per week during the first few weeks. This helps remove these fibers and prevent them from becoming embedded.
  • Use a vacuum with adjustable height: Start with the highest setting and gradually lower it until you feel gentle suction.
  • Turn off the beater bar (brush roll): The beater bar can be too aggressive for new carpet and cause excessive fuzzing or damage to the fibers. If your vacuum doesn't allow you to turn it off, use a vacuum with adjustable height and keep it on the highest setting to minimize contact.
  • Empty the bag or canister frequently: New carpets release a large amount of fibers, so you'll need to empty the vacuum more often than usual.

2. Ongoing Vacuuming (After the Initial Period):

  • Vacuum regularly: Continue to vacuum at least once a week, or more frequently in high-traffic areas.
  • Adjust the vacuum height: Adjust the height of the vacuum so that the beater bar gently agitates the carpet fibers without being too aggressive.
  • Use the beater bar (with caution): You can now try using the beater bar on a lower setting, but monitor for fuzzing. If you see excessive fuzz, turn it off or raise the vacuum height.
  • Move slowly: Vacuum slowly (four to six strokes per area) to allow the vacuum to effectively lift dirt and debris.
  • Alternate directions: In high-traffic areas, alternate your vacuuming direction at 90-degree angles (two to three strokes in each direction) to ensure thorough cleaning. This helps lift dirt from all angles.

3. Tips for Preventing Damage:

  • Avoid overly stiff brushes: An overly stiff brush on the beater bar will cause excess fuzzing.
  • Check the manufacturer's recommendations: Your carpet manufacturer may have specific recommendations for vacuuming new carpet. Refer to your carpet's warranty or care instructions.
  • Consider a vacuum specifically designed for carpets: Some vacuums are designed to be gentle on carpets and have features like adjustable suction and brush roll speeds.

By following these guidelines, you can effectively vacuum your new carpet and keep it looking its best for years to come.
